7 reasons to start a daily routine

If anyone knows me, they know I am obsessed with routines. I have been ever since I was a teen. It's probably why I like being an assistant to others. I like keeping them organized & doing what I am best at!  I am a creature of habit and very predictable... Normally. Whenever my routine gets off, I get a little on edge.. I'll admit! Lucas I feel is the same way. Now that he is 9 months. He understands routine. If we don't go for our daily walk he seems a little more fussy in the evening.  

Why do you need to start daily routines?  Let me tell you a little bit about me before I brought back household routines after my little one was born.

I felt overwhelmed Every. Single. Day. Once Luke was born I was not ready to have people over to visit & meet our new bundle of joy. You know what I did the day we came home from the hospital.. Which I shouldn't have.. I cleaned furiously before anyone came over. I was so worried of what friends & family would think of our home because it was a little messy. 

We had zero routine for months. I knew I had to change if I wanted to get out of survival mode.  I had to bite the bullet and start implementing routines.

I was able to start implementing routines to maintain my sanity and basically run my household on auto pilot.  It is so hard to start routines when you feel like you are drowning, but if you ever want to get out of survival mode, you MUST start.

Start Daily Routines

1. Less Anxious

Routines help ease your anxiety.  Before I established routines, I felt stressed all of the time.  I got angry and overwhelmed at the smallest things & I would take it out on my husband who was also sleep deprived. I would cry & cry and feel resentment.  Everything was so chaotic.  It drove me crazy.

There were dishes in the sink.  The garbage's needed to be emptied.  The laundry was piling up.  The feeling of being in survival mode is overwhelming.  I was in a bad mood all the time.

2. More Organized

After I developed routines, I felt like I could breathe easier.  It made me feel so much more organized.  I didn’t get angry anymore, however I did research that hormones play a part in postpartum rage. LOL anyways,  the dishes were clean & the laundry was finally disappearing. I knew things were being handled and not slipping through the cracks. I also like to practice minimalism & declutter often. 3. Less Likely to Forget Something

When you have household routines, you are less likely to forget something.  I bet when you walk into your bathroom every morning to get ready, you do the same things in the exact same order. That is what happens when you have a routine.  When you have an unpredictable life, it helps to have things on auto pilot.

You don’t have to think twice about it, you just do it.  It is a lot harder to forget something when you have a routine.

4. Save Time & Money

Routines most definitely save time and money.  When things are on auto pilot, it leaves you time to do other things.  You don’t have to think about doing them.  This saves you time figuring out what to do and when.

Meal Planning is just one example of how routines save you time and money.  No more going through the drive-thru at lunch or in my case.. Going to our local Planet Organic deli & getting all the vegan eats..  You can save a ton of time and money.

It takes about 10 minutes for me to go to the store... & starbucks for an iced tea. That's like $20.00 every other day... Thankfully I don't do that anymore! 

Routines reduce the need to plan.  You don’t have to figure out what you need to do and when.  You just follow the routine and the things that need to get done will be done.

5. Start Good Habits and Break Bad Ones

Routines allow you to start good habits and break bad ones.  Doing one load of laundry per day.  Keeping the kitchen clean.  Making your bed.  Taking off your makeup.  The list goes on and on.  It is easier to start or break habits when you add them to your routines.

6. Kids Crave Structure

My kids, like all kids, crave structure.  They like routines because they can predict what is going to happen and when.  They don’t have to guess.

If I get sidetracked and forget what time it is & it's time for Lucas's bed time, I don’t have to worry, he will most definitely remind me by losing his shit when he's playing independently before bath time.

I tried to start a bedtime routine as early as possible with Lucas.  I started his nighttime routine around 5 weeks. I know it sounds absolutley crazy because babies don't know routine at the age but we honestly did not have issues with sleep, nor do we now.. as he is 9 months..  He still sleeps from 7:30pm/8:00pm - 8am/9am. You can see my blog post about his sleep right here. 

7. Helps Focus and Prioritize

Routines help me to focus and prioritize.  The routine gets completed first.  If it isn’t part of the routine, it will have to wait until I have time.  It is a lot easier to focus when you know what you need to be doing.

When you have life-altering events or you are just tired, it helps so much to have routines.  You don’t have to waste brain power thinking about what to do and when.  It helps you and your household to run on autopilot.

My household runs so much easier with routines.  Everyone knows what to expect and there are fewer surprises.   Everyone is happier and no one has to figure out what needs to be done.  Our priorities are in the routines. I also would highly suggest if your spouse is a busy bee and things often need to be done after work etc, share your calendar with each other on your smartphones. That way you truly will have no surprises when you think the hubs or wife will be home around their regular time & their not. Check the calendar that day & ohhp! He has a computer service. Silly me, I forgot. thankful for the calendar!  wooo woo!
